About
Equestrian politics

Equestria's political system is a form of mixed government based on the three prior systems of its founding tribes: the Earth Ponies' democracy, the Pegasi's meritocracy, and the Unicorns' elective monarchy.

The Unicorns' influence is strongest in the capital city of Canterlot, where royal sisters Princess Celestia and Princess Luna rule as coregents of the kingdom. Most other royalty and nobility also reside there, but only have local political influence, which is why the city is sometimes referred to as a kingdom of its own.

The nation's public services, such as education, health, transport and weather, among others, are regulated by respective official organizations seated in Canterlot. These organizations, each headed by a chancellor, ensure that the services are held to the same high standards all over the land.

Outside of the capital, most communities are self-governed. Land communities, from small villages to large cities, are majoritively influenced by Earth Pony traditions; they are presided over by an elected mayor, while most decisions are made by means of assembly. Sky communities, by contrast, follow the Pegasi's customs; rather than by election, positions of leadership — notably captains — are earned through fair competition.

As a peaceful kingdom, Equestria does not boast a national military. However, most medium to large-sized communities are protected by their own local forces, such as Canterlot's Royal Guard, or Cloudsdale's Wonderbolts. Smaller communities tend to rely on local heroes for protection.

In recent years, after a prolonged period of isolation, Equestria has forged an alliance with the newly returned Crystal Empire. Amicable relations have also developed with most of the other neighbouring nations, including the city-states of Griffonstone and Yakyakistan, the Changeling Kingdom, the Dragon Lands, and Seaquestria.
