[Studying] You roll a 13 (required 10). Success!
You decide to focus on mastering what you've learned so far. Learning a spell is a good start, you figure, but being able to cast it in a timely fashion would make all the difference. With that in mind, you plunge your muzzle back into your spellbook, and resume your studies.
Honourshine and Moonflower do the same; if there is anything useful to be found in a book about the Kirin Empire, then they intend to find it. That said, the book seems to mostly cover historical events and characters, none which sound particularly relevant to your quest...
You spend most of the sunless day practising your spellcasting. After a while, however, you begin to feel the distinct tension of a drained magic pool for the first time, forcing you to take breaks every now and again.
Meanwhile, your friends finish reading The Mystical Empire, and conclude that it is titled as such because after all, very little is known about the Kirin. While unicorns of old travelled to then Ponyland — and later, Kirin to the Peaks of Peril —, the culture itself never left the island.
As for their history, it is impossibly chaotic. Accounts may be taken either literally or metaphorically, neither of which making much sense. But were any of them to be believed, demons would hide between every other line, manifesting as anything from vicious beasts to household objects — a far cry from the peaceful life you've grown accustomed to.
Either way, by what you believe is the end of the day, you manage to cast the Camouflage spell entirely from memory. You still make a mistake here and there, and have to retry a few times, but you think you're getting the hang of it. With enough luck, you won't draw a blank when you need it most!
You learn Camouflage!
The next morning, you are awakened by golden light beaming through your cabin's window. Over waves of glimmering jade, a warm sun shines brightly in the familiar deep azure of a fair summer sky, flanked by twin moons.
Your party climbs upstairs to the upper deck, and as you step outside, you take in a deep breath of fresh air. A light breeze circles down from the mast to brush through your mane, and after a few blissful minutes, a bell rings at the front of the ship.
Crewmate: "Land ho!"
As the ship approaches the docks of a coastal village, you and your friends make ready for your journey. You fill your saddlebags with enough food to last a week, though Honourshine ends up carrying most of it.
You get 3 Rations!
Sunshine Berry: "All set? This is the town we'll be staying at. If you need a refill, just come back here; we've got enough supplies to last about a moon. Well, a moon in Equestria, anyway."
Cerulean Drift: "Think we'll make it back in time for Nightmare Night? Ah, don't rush it — it sounds like you've got a lot on your plate."
Cloud Wayfind: "Aye, and remember: if you get in trouble, blow your sealwhistle. In these lands, mail critters may be your only friends in a day's walk."
You nod, and once the ship is moored, you step out onto the wooden pier and take in the sights. Workers move cargo to and from a dozen sailboats along the docks, while others sail along the sandy shores.
To the east, a red gate marks the entrance to the village, behind which a path leads to overgrown uplands. Several buildings peek out from the thick foliage above, each stylized with architecture both foreign and welcoming.
In the distance to the northeast, far beyond the incessant chirping of cicadas and the gentle sound of wooden wind chimes, towers a colossal portal. A large banner hangs from the top of the structure, displaying to far and wide a label in a language you cannot read.
Sunshine Berry: "Welcome to Shui-Ti! This is as far as we go, but as long as you're in the area, your cabin's got free beds to rest in."
Cerulean Drift: "And while you're here, this port's probably the best shot you'll get at finding someone you can talk halfway to. And if you're lucky, you might even find someone to trade your bits in with. That said, best of luck to you!"

After that's settled, it's time to look for somecreature (pony or kirin) who speaks our language and is willing to be a guide on our travels. The port, markets, and inns/taverns would be natural places to look.
Afterwards we should take a casual stroll around the town and look for a trader that speaks our language.
There is a lot of info we can derive from the art.
- There is a >8 stories tall paifang/torii-like structure. I know the word "portal" can also just mean "door", but I wouldn't be surprised if it's a literal portal. That might explain why the inside of the gate is jet black and seemingly not empty. I was going to say that there's no point to having an actual door with a gate if there is no wall, but I guess it's kind of symbolic.
- There are three celestial bodies visible. A sun befitting summer, a smaller moon (with a question mark on it? heh), and a larger crescent moon. (I don't quite remember the mechanics of moon phases and what this might tell us. Or if part of the moon is actually occluded by another celestial body in this model of the firmament.)
- A GARGANTUAN FULL-SIZED ADULT DRAGON (no mere teenage dragon like Smoke) is casually flying around above the city. I wonder if we can talk to him or hitch a ride, heh, or if our paths won't really cross? And I wonder how dragons fit in under this sky? Are they a different community than we know from the Dragonlands under our sky? (Sidenote: what do we call our sky, collectively? It does include the Griffon kingdom, the lands we saw in our "Map of North Luna Ocean", etc., so not limited to our Equestrian nation or continent.) Or are they able to travel across the Unknown? (We know to call it the Unknown, borrowing from 2024-11-18. If there weren't a more official name for it, I'd generically call it the world-ocean, frozen sea, skyless sea, etc.)
There is more I could say (on magic, our relationship with the crew, what we should do now, etc.), but I'll need to leave it to when I have more time to write.
Let's hope we don't get separated! Perhaps it would be worth distributing them more evenly, despite the weight.
I keep coming back to what "Shui Ti" means in Kirinese. The first part obviously seems to mean "water", but the second part could mean a lot of things. Waterbody, Waterproblem, Waterkicked?
Alright, it looks like a lot of people have submitted their commands already, but ideas for what we should do:
- Finding an interpreter who'd be willing to travel with us seems like the natural first step Drift prompted us on towards the end. But we have to consider what would be in it for them. Would we have to hire them? Or would they conveniently have their own reasons/quest that we can help with?
- Is there a government here somewhere? Local or national? It might be nice to get to know them. But we don't know how they'll react and how "in" on Dirt's disappearance they are, if they would choose to help or hinder us, or be indifferent. So we have to consider if we want to be more incognito.
- We should probably ask around for Dirt's final whereabouts. Maybe try to find where he was staying.
I kind of wonder how tied the ship and crew are toward the guild actually. They mentioned going to the Kirin Empire before on trade runs, so maybe that's why they got hired into the guild. So I guess then the ship wouldn't be royally owned by the guild or anything, merely chartered.
Ah, so our sealwhistles will work, at least within this sky? And they aren't a guild-only/Fluttershy-only thing? The Unknown still struck me as an extremely inhospitable place, but it might not be out of the question for some creatures (Dragons? Whales?) to be able to transit it. I wonder how the mail critters get paid; probably with treats hehe.
Also, I've finally caught up on my analysis backlog in recent updates 😇.
That's why I suggested checking out the traders. We know that some Kirins trade with ponies so it sound reasonable to assume that we could find one who understand our language. And while a trader may not be willing to serve as our guide, maybe one of them knows someone we could hire.
During the one-month timeskip in 2023-08-28, we worked "most days" on , and our savings increased by 200-300 bits. We only know the net increase, so our actual income depends on what our expenses were. I suppose we went to the equivalent of a "trade school" in this world, so slightly "skilled" labor. I wonder what level of education most ponies need.
Meanwhile, Gerwalta in 2018-12-24 proposed to accompany us to Midgard. I don't really know what her expectations for treasure were.
So… since it's up to a month (potentially less) of "skilled" labor, maybe around 200 bits would be reasonable, but it's really hard to say for sure. I really hope we can pay with favors instead, or the EVA pays. Or maybe we can find more than one choice of guide, so there isn't just one whose offer we have to accept.
...but this is a settled land. An alien land, of alien customs, and alien peoples, and besides, we are here with a purpose. An objective. So we'll need more than just moxie and guts.
We'll need a guide. So lets go look for one.
